SWANN-MAX-IP-CAM

Yesterday i decided to go out and buy an IP camera, just because its something i havent got and my money was burning a hole in my pocket. I was looking for a wireless one, but couldnt find a decent one that i liked, so i decided that i would get this wired one from maplins. I only installed it last night, and tried to configure it. I found that when it was installed the web browser software, when you browse to the cameras IP address isnt very….good. Infact its shocking. Its not very fast, not very stable and overall i would give the software that runs 4/10. The camera is pretty good, does exactly what its meant to say. Im having abit of trouble getting the motion detecter working, well it works i just cannot get the SMTP server working. But im working on it ;-) Im going to link it to my website when i figure how to!!

netgear sc101

A couple of months ago i was forced to look for a new LAN server, as my older one was in my cellar on the floor sitting there doing its job nicely with a 500GB HDD in, all my shares set up, music, videos, pictures and a couple of other ones. Then one morning i got up and found that my cellar had flooded. I tried drying out the server but it was pronounced dead, cause of death was drowning. I wasnt worried about the LAN server as such, i was more worried about my HDD that was just about full, it had all of my details on and videos and music that i had collected over the years. I tried plugging it into some of my computers and it wasnt even detected. I even tried it in a USB to IDE converter, but the disc was detected but not accessable. So i decided after about 2 weeks looking on the net that i was going to buy a netgear SC101. I have read some pretty bad reviews about this device but i thought fuck it, it was only £40 off ebay or something like that. It had its advantage this over any of the others, because it had room to fit 2 500GB HDD’s where most of the others could only hold 1. It finally arrived and i had a few problems at first but the thing i wanted to do firstly was test my 500GB HDD in it to see if it could be detected. I had got over the fact that i was going to lose all my data on the HDD. By luck i put it in and the drive was detected, it was only showing up as 460GB but who am i to complain about losing 40GB! Unlike my other LAN server, this has the option to mirror the drives, comes with backup software, and has an auto standby mode to stop the discs over heating. Ive had the device plugged in without turning it off now for 2 months, and still have no problems, i have no idea why people complain about this device, its the best money i have spent. I currently have 500GB and a 160GB HDD in the device. The only problem i thought of at first is you have to have software installed on all the computers that want to have access to the device, but the more i thought about it, surely that is better security? I had problems getting the software working with VISTA, but turns out it wasnt compatable, so a quick browse on the net and came across this site where you can find the software for VISTA, it is only in BETA mode but yet again i have had no problems with it.

new ipod nano vs ipod 30GB

I got paid on friday of this month and decided i would buy Erica something as a treat. I decided i was going to buy her the new ipod nano 8GB version because she has always wanted one. I was going to get it her for christmas but if you know me you will know that as soon as i have money it burns a hole in my pocket so i have to spend it. I went down to currys in huddersfield and bought one. I was unsure on the colour to get but i thought if i get black you cant go wrong. She loved it. I cant believe how apple can make something so large…..so small. 8GB in such a little thing. I also cant believe you can play videos on it, i know it wouldnt be practical but if you can you might as well.

Also i cant believe how much smaller it is than my 30GB video ipod! I struggle to fill more than 5GB on my ipod, but its my mission this year, to fill nearly the full 30GBs with MP3′s. Ill start ripping my CD’s and by christmas i will have it full (hopefully) although by then i will have so much more CD’s that i will have to start removing

bit of a glitch!

Not too sure what happened to my site today, but i was messing with the DNS settings on 123reg’s website and everything went tits up. Also been messing with dyndns as i point my domain name to my dyndns name, as i run this site from my cellar over a sky broadband connection (not very good) so it may be up and down. Anyways i put all the settings back to normal and nothing happened, it was just saying “www.rhodzy.co.uk” could not be found. You couldnt even ping it. So i logged back on to 123reg’s control panel, reset all the DNS settings back to default, change the nameservers back to 123reg’s default (even though i hadnt even touched them) and saved it all and it still wouldnt work. So i tried everything else that i could think of, I had been trying to install ISPCONFIG over ssh, so i wondered if that had anything to do with it. I deleted the ISPCONFIG database and installation directory, and rebooted my server. That didnt make any difference. To get it working i had to change the forwarding rules on 123reg’s site (not changed these either) Saved them as something different and put them back to how they origionally were (when the site stopped working) Then EUREKA suddenly it was back alive. Dont you just hate computers?

netgear DG834GT hacked!

I finally plucked up the courage to update my sky router, it was causing me nothing but problems, kept rebooting and disconnecting, so i knew something had to be done. Sky technical support are usless and arn’t worth a blow on a rag mans trumpet. I have been on the phone to sky technical support for easily 3 hours in the past 3 weeks and that is enough for me! So i read up on the net and came across this little GUIDE

So far i have had no problems and no disconnections. It got very frustrating using the internet with online gaming because it was forever disconnecting on me. So hopefully fingers crossed it wont be doing it again.

I am now running firmware V1.02.09

I wonder when sky are going to get this issue resolved because they swore blind to me that it wasnt there dodgy firmware that was the problem!

Hopefully i should have a “always on” internet connection!

eureka! it worked….

A few month ago I had just a basic LAN server with a 500GB hDD installed full of data. One morning I got up to find that my cellar had flooded and the LAN server had blown up. I was really worried about my data because I had all of my financial details and things I had collected from the internet over the past year. I tried drying out the device and still had no luck with it. So I decided to buy a “Netgear SC101″ Storage system. This is a LAN server…well kinda….It can hold 2 IDE HDD’s both 500GB if I wanted. But at the moment I have only got a 500GB and a 160GB installed. The device also supports mirroring and comes with backup software. Im not bothered about mirroring at the moment or the backing up of my data.I got the device out of the packaging and plugged in my 500GB HDD that had gotten wet after the flood. The HDD wouldn’t get recognised with any computer so I was so glad that I didn’t throw it away. I plugged it into the SC101 and booted up. The SC101 recognised the disc and formatted it. The device works really well but I have heard some bad reviews about crashing and the discs not coming back online. One of the small disadvantages with this is having to install the client software on each computer that wants to access the shares. Suppose its good security though…
