Lack of new App in the Android Market

android_marketI have been checking the Android Market over the past couple of days and I can usually find something that takes my fancy that makes me go “oh ill check that out” but the past couple of days have been different. I cant believe there is no applications that I fancy trying…not sure what is going on, but the applications seem to have come to a standstill. This is a shame really as I really do enjoy reviewing applications and testing out some of the great ideas people have come up with and developed the application. I myself have made a decision to learn how to write applications for the android platform and look forward to trying to. Nothing like putting pressure on myself during my already busy days!

My Latest Trend!

During the boring days at home I found myself flicking through TV Choice On Demand when I came across “Ice Road Truckers” in the HD section, 4 Episodes so I thought I would give it a try. I have seen it advertised quite a few times on the box and always fancied it but never really got around to watching it.

Anyways – I found myself getting into the first episode and it quickly flew by, next thing I know 4 hours later I have watched the whole 4 waiting for the next ones to become available!  If you haven’t watched them I would highly recommend it!

Here is a little info on what it is about:::

Ice Road: It happens 1000 miles north of the US boarder. The transition from the gravel highway to ice occurs 40 miles northeast of Yellowknife.
In gloomy winter even the bright shinny sun seems a tad frozen. As early as November, winter arrives. The temperatures plummet, the lakes freeze over and the marshes turn rock solid. In late February the ice thickens to 40 plus inches, and the portage season continues till April.
Most of the roads lie over the frozen lakes and it is estimated that about 85 percent of roads traverse these frozen blocks of ice. The landscape of the truckers path is white and can get very weary, however this is a reality which gets shadowed by the dangers of the trip.
So the Truckers who haul 70 ton rigs, hundreds of miles across Canada’s frozen lakes aren’t afraid of the dipping mercury as it sustains the thickness of the ice. It is the unusually warm temperatures which leads to the melting of the ice. The cause of such incidences are related to global warming. This means that the traffic on the roads would be on the decline resulting in fewer goods hauled.
Ice should be about 40 inches thick in order to support the heaviest rigs. If the ice is just 36 inches (3 feet) thick then you will hear a sound which is like shattering glass, when a massive truck is driven over it. If the surface gives way, a trucker will have just a few seconds to jump to safety. The shock of frigid water and freezing air can trigger a fatal heart attack.

Demand for Ice Road Truck Drivers: Diamonds were unearthed in the northern territories of Canada in the year 1991. To sustain the diamond mines (250 miles north or Yellowknife), 300,000 tons of fuel, explosives, steel and concrete is been hauled early year. These mines are being supported by the ice road truckers. With the diamond business exploding, demand for haulage has increased tenfold.

Speed limit to follow: Driving over ice requires a lot of discipline and this starts with the speed. As a truck moves past a stretch of icy road, it creates a shallow depression all around it. It is estimated that the depression is proportional to the speed of the Truck. If the truck travels above a certain speed, it can damage the roadbed so severely that the next vehicle that follows will break through the ice. Hence the speed limit on these icy roads is 22 mph. On some sectors the maximum speed is just a few miles per hour.

Ice Road Truck Stop: There is a CB’s Truck Stop, 120 Gateway Dr. Yellowknife, NWT. Tel: (867) 984-3121 There is another truck stop in Lac de Gras, which is warm and carpeted, has a cafeteria and lounges with widescreen satellite TV. Truckers sleep in their rigs, which are kept running at around 1200 rpm, so that the engines don’t freeze.

Six of the main truckers that are followed are::

  • Hugh Rowland
  • Rick Yemm
  • Alex Debogorski
  • Jay Westgard
  • T.J. Tilcox
  • Drew Sherwood

They are all great but I have to say my favourite is Alex Debogorski

Going old skool moto v3x

You may have read on one of my previous posts I was going to send off some of my old mobiles to BananaGreen and get cash back. I had a think and decided I would do this but I wanted to keep old of my Motorola V3x, not too sure why but there is something about this phone that I really like, although I do remember when I was using it every day I couldn’t stand it, so I am a little bit puzzled by why I don’t want to let it go. Anyways I decided to keep it but it is locked to the three network, over the past couple of days I have been trying to get it unlocked. I have been trying various methods I have found over the internet but still no luck, I have reflashed the phone with various firmwares but still keep getting the following errors:

  • Enter Subsidy Password……

When the Subsidy password is entered wrong I get the error message:

  • Contact Operator

Now I am reluctant to pay for the code as I see most people have over the internet, I find it very difficult to understand you can unlock the Apple iPhone and Android G1 with ease but still there is no easy way to unlock a Motorola V3x that is around 5 Years old!

I know if I ring 3 mobile up they wouldn’t give me the Subsidy code, so there is no point in even trying.

This is one of the things that annoys me the most, a simple task that doesn’t appear so simple and will wind me up until I get the phone unlocked and working on multiple networks.

If anyone has a way of doing this and are reading this post, please please tell me the way!

Applications I have used

  • MotoKup
  • Cor3FWconfig
  • MotoRocker

Hmm the puzzle continues…

Android App – Pkt Auctions eBay

What a great application this is! A must have for any eBay user with an Android mobile phone. Search ebay directly from your mobile phone! It has some unique ways of searching too, scan any barcode and search for the product directly on eBay! I can honestly say I havent managed to scan a bar code and find the product on ebay but this is still a great feature to have!

The main page tabs include:

  • My eBay
  • Deals
  • Live Chat
  • Scan
  • Settings
  • About

When you log into your eBay via this application it really has a nice, crisp interface which offers the following tabs

  • Watching
  • Buying
  • Selling

Keep track of the most important things on eBay!

You can set the application to notify you 10/15 minutes before an item you are bidding on is about to end, so there is never an excuse not to win the item you want and say “I forgot what time it was going to end!” This option is also avaliable on items you are watching!

There are options on which eBay site you would like to use as your primary site either UK or US sites avaliable and option to enable you to search UK and US eBay sites.

This application get a 9/10 rating from me!

This application is avaliable for download from the Android Market

Android App – GFindster Review

I have just installed the GFindster application which is basically a chat application that uses your GPS location to find other G1 users also using the application. There are various settings you can setup like, set your own username, whether or not you would like to recieve messages when you exit the application to do something else. You can also find recent Twitter posts around your area as well, this is a pretty useful feature if you are a dedicated Twitter user and like to find out what other users are doing in your area.

I personal found this application a great idea BUT a little intrusive and full on. There seems to be no organisation on how the messages are displayed they just seem to pop up from all directions of your screen, if in the main window. It displays online users by using the Google MAPS display which is a really cool way of doing it, I do like the fact you can look at your area, select an online user and start a chat with them, view profile etc. When i launched the application there was also no need to register, just simply add your username and chat.

The reason I thought this application was a little intrusive was after I ended the application messages were still popping up on my screen for 2 minutes after I closed the APP and then I recieved the EXIT message. Maybe a future release will get around this little but anoying issue!

I wont be leaving this application on my phone as I dont really chat alot online.

I would rate this application 3/10

This application is avaliable from the Android Market
