iTunes Match – VirginMedia Problems

So yesterday I posted about iTunes Match upload problems on my slow internet connection. Well I say slow, it’s currently 10mb download and not too sure about the upload speed.

After some searching on the internet I came across a Virgin Media blog where quite a few people are complaining about iTunes Match uploading music to the cloud and people seem to be coming across quite a few errors, some not being able to upload and getting error messages within iTunes and some just taking forever. I myself am in the taking forever to upload category.

Apparently VirginMedia have a cap in place where if you upload too much data within the times of 3pm – 8pm you will be auto lowered onto the capped upload speed. However I tried this morning (I currently have 386) that need to be uploaded. However after 2 hours, it had only uploaded 7 songs.

I have a nasty feeling that on the 13th January when I get upgraded to 100mb broadband, it’s not going to make any difference.

I also read that some people tethered onto their O2 iPhone connection and the iTunes Match started uploading quicker than it was on a Virgin Media 100mb Fibre Optic connection.

I hope Virgin sort this out soon, you would have thought with Fibre connections this sort of thing would be small fry to upload a few hundred mb of data.

iTunes Match – First thoughts

So today I subscribed to iTunes Match. Why?

1) I wanted all my music available where ever I went.
2) I wanted all of the album artwork that was available to me
3) I wanted someone to sort out my music collection while I drank coffee and which was all automatic

This works really well, however one thing I am disappointed with was the ability to not rename the file name of my music. iTunes match obviously had in mind what all the albums were but it didn’t rename the tracks that were in different styles. I wanted all my music to look similar. I have file names in capital letters, lower case and was hoping iTunes would sort all these out when it downloaded the album artwork for all of my music. However it didn’t.

This was a huge disappointment for me and for that reason I decided to turn off my auto renew subscription. I am going to see how much i use iTunes match and try to justify to myself is it worth the £22 that I paid for the year.

Another grumble I had, not anything to do with apple, or I don’t think it is, is how long it takes to upload the songs that iTunes doesn’t already have.

I have had iTunes running all day and uploading music files to “the cloud” but this is still on going as you can see from here

I think this may have something to do with my crappy upload speed but Im not sure yet. Time will tell.

Overall I am half satisfied and half not, I really wanted all my music to have a standard naming convention which iTunes match simply just hasn’t done.

#Samsung BD-D5500/ZA Blu-Ray DVD Player will not connect back to network

Recently my dad bought a new Blu-Ray DVD player, a Samsung BD-D5500/ZA. This device has network connectivity and can connect to the internet, so basically it turns your TV into a SmartTV.

All was working fine and I set it up to connect to my Media Server for movie streaming.

The problem came when it just refused to get an IP Address anymore. it was coming up with a 169.254.x.x address. Annoyingly I could see my router was trying to offer an IP to the device but it just wouldnt accept it. I even tried giving it a static IP which was hard coded into the machine but still no luck.

I had tried everything, IP settings, Router settings, Network cable testing and still nothing, I even turned the device off on the button and still nothing.

Finally this morning I cracked it, something so simple that you would have thought an IT guy would have thought of. I turned the BD-D5500/ZA off at the mains, killing all power to it, can you believe it? It actually worked, my media servers were now showing up and streaming was back!

So for all you people who say all you have to do to work in IT is “turn it off and back on again” 99% of the time you would be right, you just need to give it ago everynow and then.

Reverse Scrolling Windows XP

OS X Lion (Home) + Windows XP (Work)

Well since upgrading to OSX Lion at home, I wasn’t too fond on the reverse scrolling, but after using it for a while, I actually love it! The only problem is now when I come to use my Windows machine at work, I find it incredibly annoying that I don’t have reverse scrolling and there is no option anywhere on the system.

Then a quick search on Google fetched up the following site… http://rzy.me/19s

It works like a treat and now I have reverse scrolling on my Windows machine. No more getting frustrated with scrolling!

No more BlackBerry problems

The title explains it all, as good as the phone is, I can no longer get my head around it. I have a blackberry for work and I think one is enough.

The phone is listed on ebay and it up for a good price of 280 pounds.

Next on the selling list is my HTC desire Z

Oh dear 4th BlackBerry problem!

Well I’m laid here just wondering how many problems I am actually going to get with this BlackBerry Torch now…as the title shows this is numero 4!

This time its with the keypad lights, I’m laid in the dark so you would think the keypad would light up with it having light sensors built in? Well this didn’t happen and after a battery pull the keypad was lit up once again. But believe me I am getting sick and tired of pulling the battery.
